It’s such a treat to have Helena Hunting on for my Q&A today! She’s one of my favorite authors and has 2 new books coming soon! I love her short and sweet IG bio:👇🏻
“Writer of books. Popcorn connoisseur. Lover of hockey. Wife. Mom. Worst person to have in the passenger seat of your car, ever.”-Helena
But she’s also a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author known for her contemporary romance and romcoms! Check out our chat below!
Helena! You have so many books out that I can’t read them fast enough! That’s one of the things I love about you as an author, you seem to write so fast and don’t leave us waiting long. How long does it typically take you to write a book?
The first draft usually goes down pretty quickly, sometimes in 4-6 weeks, but it definitely depends on the book and what else I have on my schedule when I’m writing. If I’m not juggling multiple edits, I typically write between 4-5000 words a day. But I often spend a couple of weeks outlining the story and developing the characters before I jump into the first draft. And my editing process often takes just as long as getting the first draft down, so while it may seem fast, the other parts of the process balance it all out. From outline to copyedit stage, it takes about 4 months for me to draft and edit a novel.
Which series and which standalone that you’ve written have a special place in your heart? (although I’m sure they all do).
That is definitely a hard question because every book has a special place for me. I will say that Lavender and Kodiak’s book, Little Lies, was a story that I felt very compelled to write, and I have a lot of love for those characters. For standalones, Love on the Lake which releases soon holds a special place in my heart. Love on the Lake is a very emotional contemporary romance and I love the characters and their chemistry, but it’s their journey to love and self-acceptance that makes them so special for me.
When did you know you wanted to become a writer?
Probably from the moment I could write a complete sentence. I’ve been writing stories for as long as I can remember and as a child, when I couldn’t spell the word I would draw pictures. I didn’t think it would ever become a fulltime career. I assumed I would write on the side for myself, so I’m grateful that I’m able to do the thing I love as my job.
What did you grow up reading?
I loved Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley High when I was in middle school, but by the time I was 12 I was reading VC Andrews. I shifted to reading Dean Koontz and Clive Barker which is ironic because I can’t watch horror movies at all, but I devoured those books! I think the lack of visuals made it easier for me to manage, because I could decide what I wanted my imagination to gloss over. I also loved reading Margaret Atwood. We read The Handmaid’s Tale in grade ten and I fell in love with her stories. I discovered paranormal romance a little later in life, and that continues to be a favourite genre.
Who is another author you would love to sit down and chat with?
JR Ward would be such a cool author to meet. She builds amazing worlds you just want to be part of, and I love that all of her characters have these obstacles to overcome that are so organically written. I feel like I’d probably embarrass myself by fangirling, though.
I started my bookstagram blog about 2 years ago, and it blows my mind how engaged some authors are with their fans and readers and their willingness to take the time to respond or comment on their posts. How has this platform helped you as an author and what is the hardest thing about it?
IG and social media can be such a great place to interact with readers. I spend a lot of time in my reader group on Facebook where we talk books and share things that make us laugh, or smile, or cry. It can be such a great, warm place to connect and be part of a community. I think the hardest thing is trying to keep up with all of it and maintain some balance especially when I’m on deadline.
What is something most people wouldn’t guess about you?
I have terrible social anxiety and book events stress me out, but I still love going to them and meeting readers. I just need a week of hibernation afterwards. I also have a serious love of cross stitching.
How do you celebrate when you finish a book?!
Sometimes I’ll celebrate by binge watching a TV show, but for the last book I finished drafting my friend brought over a bottle of bubbly and we celebrated with a charcuterie board and champagne, which is a lot more sophisticated than me eating a bowl of popcorn. It really varies on the book, but this last one was something I was excited to have finished drafting.
I adored When Sparks Fly, and the Spark sisters! How did this series come about?
I think we started plotting this series in 2019. I’d been to Colorado for Book Bonanza and I really wanted to set a series there. I also loved the idea of an event hotel, run by three sisters and the idea formed from there. It’s been such a joy writing their stories, especially because of the sister bond and how they grow individually, as a family and with their partners. I’m very excited for London’s story this May, and I just finished content edits on Harley’s story!
London’s story, Starry-Eyed Love, is coming in May 2022 and I can’t wait! Can you tell us a little more about it?
I loved writing London and Jackson’s story and their meet cute was so fun to write. He approaches her in a bar and she ends up turning him down because she’d just gotten out of a relationship and didn’t want to lead him on when she probably wasn’t going to call him anyway. Three months later she ends up in a meeting that he crashes, and they end up working together. Cue all the awkwardness! It’s a fun, emotional, sexy Cinderella story and I’m so excited for readers to watch these two fall in love!
I love doing This or That questions, because it’s a quick way to learn things about people!

Thank you so much Helena for this awesome Q&A 💕. I grew up reading Sweet Valley High as well! Those were some of the best books. I also have a love of cross stitch, but haven’t done it in a long time. I remember my grandmother teaching me. It’s so relaxing and I hope to pick up that hobby again soon!
